THE YEAR IN REVIEW

Arts Scholars values creativity, curiosity, and community.  Take a look at the many ways we have connected as scholars, artists, and as a community of learners this year.

Service Day

All College Park Scholars begin their college experience by completing a day of community service. A Scholars tradition that is 25 years old, Service Day reflects our commitment to service and the importance of community, two of our founding values. This year Arts Scholars served with Joe's Movement Emporium, Creative Suitland, and the UMD Arboretum.

Colloquium

First and Second Year colloquiums give students an opportunity to explore the role of the arts in our personal and social lives, and expand their personal definitions of what constitutes art while building community.  The course structure includes a mix of campus visits, experiential guest artist visits, in-class discussions, as well as group and individual research projects.

Field Trips

Each semester students participate in one of the 4-5 offered experiential field trips. Field trips are an important analytical aspect of the program experience that provides invaluable opportunities for students to engage with art from a range of contrasting disciplines. The added benefit of these trips is to introduce students to the vibrant and active arts community that permeates the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. These excursions vary in scale and type and include visits to The Clarice Performing Art Center, galleries and museums, performing arts venues, as well as occasional day trips to Baltimore or a weekend in New York City.

Community Building

Arts Scholars build community in a variety of ways.  Now in its 6th year, Concert in the Quad (CITQ) is an impactful collaboration with the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, which features 60-90 minute intimate performance and discussion with emerging to well-established professional performing artists. Developed and led by Arts Scholars Teaching Assistants,  Coffee & Crafts events offer students an opportunity to engage in hands-on art-making in a fun and relaxed environment where they can use creativity to build community. Peer mentors guide first-year students in acclimating to college, connect them to resources on campus, and plan several events per semester.  And the Arts Advisory Board (AAB) is a student organization tasked with planning and implementing co-curricular activities, and relaying student interests, concerns, and perspectives to Arts Scholars faculty.

Of Note

Arts Scholars consistently go above and beyond, and it shows!  Here are just a few noteworthy accomplishments from the past year.
